As a medical professional with a penchant for exploration, attending the recent PCP Annual Conference was not just an opportunity for professional growth but also a chance to indulge my curiosity for art and history. Nestled in the heart of a bustling city, the conference venue SMX Mall of Asia buzzed with anticipation as internist from around the Philippines gathered to exchange knowledge and expertise in the field of Internal Medicine.

My trip start in Bacolod Silay Airport waiting for my boarding time with Cebu Pacific Airlines, I chill for a short foot massage at Spa Natura. This massage service at the Silay Bacolod Airport is a branch of Bacolod Spa Natura. This is definitely a 5 star service. After an hour of relaxation is now time to board.

Flying At Cebu Pacific Airlines

This budget airline provides passengers the option to fly economically. You may choose from the time you book for a flight your luggage options. For me, a bagpack for this trip will suffice.

Some of their planes has a free charging slot for passengers. An in flight magazine come handy for pleasure reading. The “Smile for Cebu Pacufic” show case travel deatinations as well as travel tips.

This also comes with a online version.

Arrival at Ninoy Aquino terminal 3. Upon deplaning we are accomodated with a short bus ride to the terminal.

Terminal 3 advantages would be a close proximity to most international flights, there is a wide range of services from banking services, food and shopping.

Terminal 3 via Grab Services to Convention Center, SMX Mall of Asia

There are various ways going to your destination from terminal 3. A bus ride, airport taxi, private chattel or grab. For this trip I choose to hop on grab service.

Gtab has a booth just outside the exit doors of Terminal 3. You can book it by yourself or be assisted by their staff. Its a seamless, stress free process for a reasonable fee.

PCP 2024 Annual Conference

Have been attending this conference since 2007. Here the country’s internal medicine specialist gather yearly every first week of May to sharpen clinical knowlwdge and foster fellowship. Held this year at SMX Mall of Asia and the theme is maxIMaze: the IMpowered internist.

One arrival registration is seamless since I had been registered online. The sessions gives updates that is helpful to our practice.

A Captivating Evening with “Miss Saigon” at Solaire Manila

Step into the heart of Vietnam and witness the epic tale of love, loss, and redemption come to life in “Miss Saigon” at Solaire Manila. From the moment the curtains rise, you’re transported to a world of passion and turmoil, where the sights and sounds of war-torn Saigon envelop you in a gripping narrative.

As the story unfolds, you’re captivated by the raw emotion and powerhouse performances of the talented cast. From the heart-wrenching vocals to the breathtaking choreography, every moment on stage is a testament to the incredible talent and dedication of the performers.But it’s not just the performances that leave a lasting impression—it’s the immersive experience as a whole.

But perhaps the most unforgettable part of my experience was the emotional journey it took me on. From moments of heartache to bursts of joy, “Miss Saigon” touches on themes that resonate with audiences of all backgrounds, reminding us of the enduring power of love and the resilience of the human spirit.

In the end, my evening with “Miss Saigon” at Solaire Manila was nothing short of unforgettable. It’s a performance that lingers in your mind and tugs at your heartstrings, leaving you longing for an encore before the final notes fade away.

Day 3! Last day of the Convention

As the convention culminates I had to book an urgent flight to Bacolod. Pippa, suddenly  got sick with vomiting and was considered to  have Cannine Anaplasmosis.

Canine anaplasmosis is a tick-borne disease caused by the bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum. It primarily affects dogs and can cause symptoms like fever, lethargy, joint pain, and decreased appetite. Treatment typically involves antibiotics prescribed by a veterinarian. Its usually a 4 week course of Doxycycline. Preventative measures, such as tick control, are also important.

As we wrap up this Annual Convention, here are the top ten things I’ve learned.

The Uncharted: 10 Fascinating Finds That Rewrote My Understanding During this Trip

1. DIY trip can be an exciting, challenging and liberating experience. I had a privilage of going to sponsored trips and im grateful with it. DIY trips give a different kind of excitement since you are the one who planned the smallest detail and observe its outcomes. If it works or you meed to find other ways. Its challenging because its your budget, your bookings and you find your own way. Liberating because your not accountable to anyone. Its just your time, your schedule, your rules and your pocket.

2.Budget airlines and budget hotels are great if you do your research well and know what you are getting. If you dont have a prima donna expectation these travel budget airlines and hotels goes even beyond your regular expectation.

3. Attending a large conference could be overwhelming. Its good to draft your way on the topics you attending in relation to your practice to get fully benefit from a big gathering.

4. Enjoy friendly faces. Its a time to meet old mentors, friends and collegues.

5. Avoid grapevine. In a gathering of a huge crowd; gossips are in place. As much a you can avoid this talks. Focus on the here and now. Talk about people in attendance.

6. Modern malls have features such a museums or gallaries that is worth you money and time. Such as the Lakbay Museum in Ayala Manila Bay and the Dessert Museum in the Maison.

7. Fancy might not need to be costly. I had booked “Miss Saigon” for some weeks prior to my schedule. I got it for 2k. A friend now tells me that since it would end 4 days from now, its already 14K! Having fancy bookings and experiences could be enjoyed if it is considered early and arranged strategically.

8. Getting the last seat of the theater might not be bad after all. It could provide a great view as well. For those who does not like the characters staring them at their faces. 😂

9. Always ready for emergency. My dog Pippa had episodes of vomiting a night prior to my arrival. She was brought to the vet in the morning for dehydration and we a current working diagnosis of Anaplasmosis. A cannine dog parasite that causes decrease platelet. Your budget should not only for your trip but also considers urgent and emergencies. You migth need to go home early for a beloved pet, family member or even yourself.

10. Grab is everywhere as long as it is in a metropolitan. 😂 For me the best way to commute.

As a lover of theater and musicals, I this night had the privilege of experiencing the timeless masterpiece “Miss Saigon” at The Theater Solaire Manila. From the moment I stepped into the grand auditorium, I knew I was in for a remarkable journey—a journey that would take me deep into the heart of love, loss, and the human spirit.

From the ornate decor to the hushed whispers of anticipation, The Theater Solaire exudes an aura of elegance and sophistication. As the lights dimmed and the first haunting notes of the overture filled the air, I felt a shiver of excitement run down my spine. I was about to embark on a sensory feast that would leave an indelible mark on my soul.

Emotional Rollercoaster

“Miss Saigon” is not merely a musical; it is a rollercoaster of emotions that grips you from the very first scene. As the story of Kim and Chris unfolded before my eyes, I found myself laughing, crying, and holding my breath in anticipation. The raw intensity of the performances, coupled with the stirring music and poignant lyrics, swept me away into a world of love and turmoil.

Stellar Performances

The cast of “Miss Saigon” at The Theater Solaire Manila delivered performances that were nothing short of breathtaking. Each actor brought their character to life with such depth and authenticity that I felt as though I were witnessing real-life events unfold before me. From the innocence of Kim to the anguish of Chris, every emotion was palpable, every note sung with passion and conviction.

Opened with “The Heat is On” he audience into the chaotic and vibrant atmosphere of Saigon during the Vietnam War, with pulsating rhythms and dynamic orchestrations. “The Movie in My Mind,” very familiar as a 80-90 kid music delivered by a local Filipina performer Kiara Dario. Its a sad and passionate song, I’m personally moved by the way it Kiara performed this number. “Sun and Moon” A beautiful duet between Chris (Nigel Huckle) and Kim (Abigail Adriano) expressing their love for each other amidst the backdrop of a war-torn Saigon, characterized by tender harmonies and sweeping orchestration that captures the intensity of their emotions. “The Last Night of the World,” Chris and Kim confront the inevitability of their separation, cherishing their final moments together with a sense of urgency and longing, underscored by haunting melodies and passionate vocals.

As the fall of Saigon approaches, Chris is forced to leave Vietnam, promising to return for Kim. Three years latter, Chris’ new life, “I Still Believe” introduces Ellen, Chris’ wife, and her friend John, as they express their belief in Chris’s return. Engineer continues to exploit Kim’s hope for a better life in America, where Kim encounter Thuy (Laurence Mossman), the man bethrowed for her to marry. Yet Thuy attempted to murder her 3 year old son, Kim in self defense shot Thuy at the back dead. Having wanted for murder, Kim, her son and the Engineer escaped to Bangkok, Thailand as refuges. Chris learns that Kim is alive and has his son. Chris and Kim reunite, but their happiness is short-lived as Chris reveals his new life with Elle. Unable to bear the thought of losing Chris again, Kim makes a devastating decision.

The musical concludes with “The American Dream (Seann Miley Moore)” and “Finale,” where Kim shots herself in order for Chris to be compelled to bring his son home. Characters grapple with the consequences of Kim’s sacrifice.

As the final curtain fell and the audience erupted into thunderous applause, I was struck by the profound impact of the musical’s message. Leaving The Theater Solaire Manila this evening, I carried with me more than just memories of a captivating performance. I carried with me a renewed sense of hope, a deeper appreciation for the beauty of the human spirit, and a heart full of gratitude for the transformative power of art. “Miss Saigon” had touched my soul in ways I never thought possible, leaving an indelible imprint that I will carry with me for a lifetime.

2. ANIMALS: Negros Forest and Ecological Foundation

Nestled adjacent to Capitol Lagoon lies a remarkable sanctuary that may resemble a zoo at first glance, yet it transcends the ordinary.

The Negros Forest and Ecological Foundation, Incorporated, a non-profit entity, stands dedicated to the preservation and safeguarding of Negros Island’s forests and its endangered species, as well as those across the Philippines. This organization operates a specialized breeding center focused on the conservation of rare mammals, birds, and reptiles primarily endemic to Panay and Negros, making it a vital hub for global biodiversity efforts.

The avian inhabitants of Negros Island showcase a diverse range of species, each with its unique characteristics and conservation status:

1. Philippine Cockatoo (Cacatua Haematuropygia, Katala): Critically Endangered due to habitat destruction and illegal pet trade, mainly found in Rasa Island, Palawan.

2. Negros Bleeding-Heart Pigeon (Gallicolumba keayi, Badlitan): Critically Endangered, recognized by its distinctive red heart patch, exclusive to the Negros-Panay Fauna region.

3. Metallic Wood Pigeon (Columba Vitiensis Griseogularis): Least Concerned, adorned with glossy gray-metallic purple feathers that shimmer in different lights.

4. Visayan Tarictic Hornbill (Penelopides Panini, Tularik): Endangered, found in Panay and Negros forests, nesting in tree cavities for egg incubation.

5. Southern Rufous Hornbill (Buceros Mindanensis, Kalaw): Vulnerable, the largest hornbill species in the Philippines, residing in Samar, Leyte, Biliran, and Bohol.

6. Buff-Eared Brown Dove (Phapitreron Nigrorum, Alimukon): Endangered, feeding on berries and fruits, restricted to limited areas including Negros.

7. Visayan Writhed Hornbill (Rhabdotorrhinus Waldeni, Talarak): Critically Endangered, exclusive to Negros and Panay, facing extinction due to deforestation, particularly in Guimaras, with a functional extinction status in Negros province.

Negros Island shelters a diverse array of mammals, each facing unique conservation challenges:

1. Warty Pig (Sus Cebifrons Negrinus, Baboy Talunon): Critically Endangered and considered the most endangered wild pig globally, surviving only in the forests of Panay and Negros after extinction in Guimaras, Cebu, and possibly Masbate.

The evening began with a sense of anticipation, the hall buzzing with excitement as the orchestra took their places on stage. The conductor, with an air of authority and passion, raised his baton, and the first notes of Mahler’s masterpiece filled the room.
